In just over a week, the Church will begin the holiest week of the year. Throughout the week, the Church commemorates Christ’s death and burial. Ancient writers called this the Great or Holy Week of Our Lord’s Passion. The custom of keeping the Holy Week goes all the way back to the time of the Apostles. When the early Christians spoke about Jesus to others, they started with the Passion of Our Lord. Scholars believe that the Passion of Our Lord spread before the other parts of the Gospel were even written down. My pastor’s column this weekend is an invitation to teenagers and to junior high students to experience our upcoming retreats on April 9th – 11th. This is also a plea to parents to consider sending your teen and junior high children to these retreats as part of your duty to catechize them as they face the challenges of this world. Because we love them, it is essential to give them the necessary tools to navigate our world that is in turmoil.

“Do to others as you would have them do to you… Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” Today’s Gospel helps us to understand what love looks like. Jesus reminds us that love gives without counting the cost. Love seeks the good of the other without looking for anything in return. This is the kind of love that Jesus invites His disciples to have in our all relationships.
