Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of every November, is a day to be grateful and to offer thanks to the Almighty, family, and friends. Family gatherings, delicious meals, extravagant parades and performances, and old school aggressively-played football—all of these things are nearly synonymous with this national holiday.
Amidst all this merriment, there's another aspect to this day that shouldn't be forgotten or overlooked. It is this aspect that adds weight to this day. It is a day to be thankful; for what was, what is, and what will be. And there is no better way to express your thankfulness for the people and the things in your life, than saying it in prayer.
O Gracious God, we give you thanks for your overflowing generosity to us. Thank you for the blessings of the food we eat and especially for this feast today. Thank you for our home and family and friends, especially for the presence of those gathered here. Thank you for our health, our work and our play.
Please send help to those who are hungry, alone, sick and suffering war and violence. Open our hearts to your love. We ask all these things through Christ your son. Amen.
